Javed Merchant Appointed Exec Pastry Chef at Renaissance Mumbai

Merchant’s key responsibilities at Renaissance Mumbai will be to bring innovation into the bakery and supervising the baking and dessert operations for Mumbai Express- the in-house deli and rest of the outlets in the hotel.

ARMED WITH a rich experience in the hospitality industry, Chef Javed Merchant joins Renaissance Mumbai Convention Centre Hotel as an Executive Pastry Chef. With over two decades of experience in the field of all things bakery, Merchant brings a dynamic perspective and accomplished skill set to the Hotel.

Merchant’s key responsibilities at Renaissance Mumbai will be to bring innovation into the bakery and supervising the baking and dessert operations for Mumbai Express- the in-house deli and rest of the outlets in the hotel. Merchant will also enhance the gastronomic experience of this unique picturesque venue. Merchant will also be refreshing the bakery menu with his signature dishes that have won him many fans over the years.

Merchant started his stint as a pastry chef with ITC Grand Maratha Sheraton in Mumbai. He also regaled many as a Pastry Chef at Novotel Mumbai Juhu and then, with Oberoi Hotels and Resorts. Chef Javed wears a hat of many feathers as he was also a part of the pre-opening team at J.W Marriott Mumbai where he worked as an Assistant Pastry Chef for 8 years. Just before joining the hotel, an entrepreneur at heart, Merchant also set up “Petits Plaisirs”- a popular dessert parlour in Mumbai.

His creative aptitude has led him to earning notable achievements such as representing India in Asian pastry Cup 2012 in Singapore. He has also represented Novotel Mumbai Juhu Beach in the GICC (Great Indian Culinary Challenge). Team won Gold Medal for Plated Desserts and Bronze Medal for Chocolate Show Piece. He has been an active member of WICA (Western India Culinary Association).
