CII holds second edition of Next Gen-Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Conference

The conference saw Anil Agrawal, Additional Secretary, DPIIT, Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India speak at the event

“Seed, support and hone indigenous talent startups to ensure that the industry uses the strength of the country and becomes an exporter of technology and components. Making the sector self-reliant, it’s time the industry works towards changing the eco system,” said Anil Agrawal, Additional Secretary, DPIIT, Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India, speaking at the second edition of the CII Delhi Next Gen-Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Conference held at Le Meridien Hotel on July 6, 2022.

Industry has a plan in place to grow the Indian AC market to 24 million units by 2030, transforming it. It has already taken several key initiatives to grow the business by increasing the production capacity, setting up new plant facilities and global technology centres etc. In addition, new products have also been developed to provide the best - in technology, new features, safety and enhanced consumer experience. It is planned to increase the local value addition to 75% from its current level of 25%. The industry plans to contribute to 15% of World Export Market from the current level of 0.5%. Currently, about 75% of the country's AC components are imported from countries, including Thailand, China and Malaysia.

Rapid technological advancement also brings with it the need for the development of clean technology and sustainable methods to combat climate change and protect the environment.

HVAC Sector has been placing conscious efforts towards development of innovative technologies which are not only energy efficient but also minimise the impact of heating and cooling activities on the environment.

The conference held an exclusive session on PLI – the session had an in-depth discussion on the Union government's production linked incentive (PLI) scheme for white goods and how it is instrumental in driving India's quest for self-sufficiency in the air-conditioning sector. The PLI scheme has given an impetus to the indigenisation of the industry and brought the much-needed focus. It is an important step towards the vision of Aatma Nirbhar Bharat and going forward the scheme will need to evolve to address some key issues of how to gear up the last mile connect and vendor development to achieve the stiff target by the manufactures under the scheme’.

Madhav Singhania, Chairman, CII-Delhi State said that besides the incentive and revenue the PLI scheme will provide, it will also help generate over two lakh jobs directly or indirectly in line with the vision of the government.

HVAC has emerged and is now recognised as the ‘sunrise sector’ in India. With the theme Sustainability, Durability and Energy Efficient, the conference had focussed sessions on “Sustainable HVAC Technology to Prevent Harmful Effects of Climate Change” and “HVAC Then and Now: What’s Next for the HVAC Industry?”. Skilling Gap is another challenge which the sector is facing and was deliberated at the event.

Over 200 people attended the CII Conference on Next-Gen Air-conditioning and Refrigeration with renowned speakers like Gurmeet Singh, Chairman & Managing Director Johnson Controls-Hitachi Airconditioning India Ltd and Jasmohan Singh, Managing Director, Frick India Ltd.
