'Every Challenge Is An Opportunity'

Jeslin Mathews, the newly appointed Director of Sales for JW Marriott Pune speaks with BW Hotelier on his new job and how he approaches the challenges of working for one of Pune's leading hotels.


WITH AN illustrious career in hospitality, Jeslin Mathews has more than over 11 years of experience in various sales functions with different hotel brands. His contagious passion, commitment and “never give up” attitude has helped him grow to be a key leader.

Mathews, who was recently appointed as Director of Sales at JW Marriott Pune, began by telling BW Hotelier, that his hotel was a landmark address in Pune. “I have had the opportunity to experience the perfect mix of corporate, MICE and socials. Being a part of the hotel’s success story has taught me immensely and anchored my growth professionally and personally,” he said.

Mathews feels that every challenge is an opportunity to learn. He truly believes in the saying that a hotelier’s life cannot be same each day. Every new day is filled with new opportunities. “I learn even today after seven years at JW Marriott Pune and this hotel has been the perfect platform to hone my skills in a highly busy environment,” he said.

“Key initiatives of benchmarking this hotel as the city’s most preferred hotel, driving conventions to a non-convention destination hotel or riding the ADR even with the largest inventory or a successful conversion to a JW Marriott from the initial Marriott Hotel have been some of my fondest memories,” he added.

Mathews is a graduate in Hotel Management from Yashwantrao Chavan Maharashtra Open University. He began his career as an Assistant Sales Manager at Le Meridien. His Marriott journey began with Courtyard by Marriott Hinjewadi, Pune and there after he went on to open the first National Sales office in Pune.

Speaking about the target sector and the clientele Mathews said, “we plan to target almost all sectors and the city still promises growth across IT, Automobiles, Pharma or Manufacturing. Hence, it becomes essential to give equal importance given to all while strategies can be different.”

“Our customers are accomplished and perceive each moment as a defining one. They look for a hassle-free experience where one venue fulfils all their requirements,” he added.

According to Mathews, the organisation is going through an exciting phase of expansion and growth and he is more excited to be part of this new world of opportunities. “I see no limit to grow and raise the bar for yourself professionally or personally and adding brands and new associates from legacy Starwood associates enhances my responsibility to handhold where ever required to play my part of upholding the true Marriott culture,” he concluded.
